CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER : SOCIOLOGIST

Picture
Jessica M. Harrison, PhD(c) LCSW is a mental health clinician, a doctoral candidate of medical sociology, and an advocate for justice in society. Her multidisciplinary work includes clinical social work, social science research, and expertise in qualitative methodologies.

Jessica is a PhD candidate of medical sociology in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. As a scholar of the sociology of health and medicine, her research involves the organization of medicine and health professions, patient-provider interactions, biomedical ethics and decision-making, and the use of medical technologies, including pharmaceuticals, in the fields of mental and reproductive health. She is particularly interested in perinatal healthcare environments and the ways in which diagnostic and treatment decisions are made within existing structures of care. As a clinician and social scientist, her work in the field consistently inspires her research questions, and sociology has given her a language and framework to address the large questions evoked by her clinical work with individuals and families. She is motivated to contribute to sociological insights that may inform healthcare practice and propel solutions to address inequalities in healthcare and across society.

As a clinical social worker for 15 years, Jessica has extensive experience providing mental health care in diverse settings. She believes in the powerful function of the therapeutic relationship to reduce isolation and improve well-being. Toward her clinical work, Jessica has advanced training through the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Postpartum Support International, the Marce Society, The American Adoption Congress, the Adoption Initiative, and the Harvard Program for Global Mental Health, among others. She has
experience as a birth and postpartum doula, which allows her to offer practical care in the therapeutic context. As a sociologist, her research supports her in linking the impacts of society, relationships, various environments, and healthcare systems to the lived experience of her individual clients.

Jessica is based in Portland, Oregon and the San Francisco Bay area. She is available for consultation, presentations, and collaboration, and she has a small therapy practice in Portland.
